Medical Leave (Employment Retention Costs)

Support Provided
Where an affected worker applies for leave to recover from physical or psychological harm caused by the October 29 Itaewon Disaster,
the employer must grant the leave.
Financial support for Employment retention costs is provided to employers who grant medical leave to affected workers. Employers must apply through an Employment Center.

- Costs incurred in compensating employers for all or part of the wages and other payments made to workers during medical leave (up to KRW 1.98 million per person per month, as determined by the Victim Relief Deliberation Committee)
- When an employer hires a replacement worker after the employee applies for medical leave and continues to employ the replacement worker for at least 30 days, part of the wages paid to the replacement worker
(up to KRW 990,000 per person per month, by determined by the Victim Relief Deliberation Committee)
Medical Leave Application procedure
The worker submits an application to the employer at
least 30 days before the scheduled start of leave.
The employer decides whether to grant the leave
within 10 days of receiving application.
The employer notifies the worker
and the Employment Center of the decision.
The worker takes the medical leave for at least one
month.
Employment Retention Cost Application Procedure
The employer applies
for employment retention cost support at the Employment Center.
The Employment Center receives the application and
reviews whether the eligibility requirements are met.
The Employment Center prepares a review opinion and notifies the
Ministry of Employment and Labor and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety (Victim Relief and Memorial Support Group) makes the
payment to the employer.
